Fireworks Exercise

The five layers for my image are four pictures and a text box. The images came from creativecommons.org and flickr.com. I used the glow effect on the Miami Redhawk picture. On the seal and arch pictures, I changed the opacity to blend them. I also rotated the text box. The topic of my image is Miami University.

News Discussion #5: Fake YouTube pages used to spread viruses

http://tech.yahoo.com/news/ap/20081008/ap_on_hi_te/tec_techbit_youtube_spoofing

Criminals are creating fake YouTube pages to spread their malicious software by making replicas of the real site.  There is a program online that helps people make the fake sites.  This is a very bad thing because it is a new way to spread viruses.  You Tube is a trusted site so people will not be cautious if the page looks normal.  This could lead to other popular Websites, snowballing until it is hard to trust any site.  We need to control the spread of viruses through Websites so that it does not danger the usefulness of the web.  Also, I still really don’t understand what the point of spreading viruses online is.  The criminal doesn’t get anything out of it.  It’s like a bully on the playground in grade school who just likes to see other people suffer, except the bully can’t even see the damage he is causing.  Luckily the article said alert Internet users will be able to detect the fake YouTube sites.  The address won’t be YouTube’s real address and to see the bad page, you have to follow a link, which is another tip off.

News Discussion #4: Microsoft Plans 3 Research Labs in Europe

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/03/technology/internet/03soft.html?_r=1&ref=technology&oref=slogin

Microsoft is setting up research centers in Britain, France and Germany to look for ways to improve Internet search technology.  Microsoft wants to improve its ability to conduct Internet searches to attract advertising revenue, especially after its failed attempt to acquire Yahoo.  The centers will try to improve Microsoft's existing search technology and research new types of searches, including searches from mobile devices and searches with pictures and video.
I think this is a good idea because more search options are always a good thing.  People rely too heavily on Google so Microsoft would be another good option if it improved and expanded to include pictures and video. Diversifying anything is a good idea and another option would be helpful.  Also, Microsoft was a leader in the technology revolution so it would be good for them to have a better search engine.
The idea of being able to search from a cell phone is very good.  I think many people would use that, especially with the rise of Blackberries and iPhones.  Mobile searching could be useful for many things so this development is something people could really benefit from.
